Value betting is about comparing the odds available with your own estimated probability of an outcome. The aim is not simply to pick likely winners, but to identify when the available price may be higher than the estimate suggests.
The important distinction: an estimated edge is not a prediction, guarantee, or verified profit. Prices move, probability estimates can be wrong, and a bet can still lose.
Decimal odds imply a probability. For example, odds of 2.00 imply a 50% chance before accounting for bookmaker margin.
A value-betting assessment compares that implied probability with an estimated probability. If you estimate a team has a better chance than the available price implies, the price may offer positive expected value.
That does not mean the team is certain to win. A selection can be the likely winner while still offering poor value at a short price. Equally, a less likely outcome can appear to offer value if the available odds are high enough relative to the estimate.
For a refresher on decimal odds and implied probability, see football betting odds explained.
Imagine a home team is available at decimal odds of 2.20. Those odds imply a probability of about 45.45%.
Now assume your estimate of the team’s chance of winning is 50%. The gap between the estimate and the implied probability is 4.55 percentage points.
For this simple win-or-lose example, multiply the assumed probability by the decimal odds, subtract 1, then multiply by 100:
(0.50 × 2.20−1) × 100 = 10%
The 10% figure is an estimated expected net return based on the assumed 50% probability. It is not a guaranteed return, and it is not the same as the 4.55-percentage-point difference between the two probabilities.
The calculation also does not automatically account for bookmaker margin, commission, stakes that cannot be placed, subscription costs, or different settlement rules.
The difficult part is not the formula. It is deciding whether the probability estimate is useful.
Value-betting software may compare prices with a model, a reference bookmaker, an exchange, or a margin-adjusted market estimate. Each approach has assumptions. Removing bookmaker margin can improve a reference estimate, but it does not establish a known true probability.
Before relying on an apparent edge, check:
Whether the price is still available at the bookmaker you can use
Whether you are comparing the same market, line, and match period
Whether the estimate includes relevant team news and recent market changes
Whether commission, limits, or account restrictions affect the practical result
Whether your records include all selections, rather than only successful examples
Falling prices can be useful information, but movement alone does not prove that a remaining price offers value. Read dropping odds strategy for more on investigating price changes before drawing conclusions.
