Double Chance Meaning: 1X, X2 and 12 Explained

Double chance betting covers two of the three possible results in a football match: a home win, a draw, or an away win. The three selections are 1X, X2, and 12.

Covering an additional result usually means accepting shorter odds than backing one of those results individually. It does not make the selection certain to win.

1. What 1X, X2 and 12 Mean

The numbers represent the home and away teams, while X represents a draw.

1XHome win or drawAway team wins
X2Draw or away winHome team wins
12Home win or away winMatch ends in a draw

The important distinction: 12 means either team must win. It does not mean a 1–2 scoreline, and a draw does not return your stake.

Standard full-match markets generally settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties. Check the market wording and the bookmaker’s rules.

2. Results and Examples

Imagine the home team is playing the away team, with these possible final scores:

0–2LosesWinsWins

The winning margin does not matter. A 1X selection wins whether the home team wins 1–0, wins 4–0, or draws.

Covering two results does not automatically give a selection a two-thirds chance of winning. Home wins, draws, and away wins are not necessarily equally likely.

For prices, implied probability, and returns, see football betting odds explained.

3. Double Chance Versus Draw No Bet

Home-or-draw double chance and home draw no bet both lose if the away team wins. Their treatment of a draw differs:

Draw no bet refunds the stake on a draw; it does not pay a winning return. Double chance 12 is different again: it loses on a draw.

Compare the offered prices and settlement terms rather than assuming either market is automatically better value. Our draw no bet guide explains the refund and payout examples.

4. Resources for Researching Double Chance

Use different resources to inspect published selections, compare bookmaker prices, or explore historical results.

ZuluBet displays football selections, including double-chance combinations, alongside outcome percentages. Those percentages are provider estimates, not independently established win probabilities.

OddsPortal includes double-chance markets on football comparison pages where available. Check the fixture, market period, and current operator price.

Betamin Builder supports historical research for 1X, X2, and 12 strategies. Its documentation describes double-chance prices calculated from 1X2 odds, rather than necessarily recorded double-chance quotes.

Start with one hypothetical fixture and check how all three selections would settle. Understanding which result loses is just as important as knowing which two results are covered.
